Clean Water & the Amendment

Learn More

In 2008, more than 1.6 million Minnesotans voted for passage of the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment to provide 25 years of increased state funding to protect and clean up state waters and our Great Outdoors. Post-election polling showed the number one reason Minnesotans voted for the Amendment was “cleaning up and protecting Minnesota’s lakes, rivers and streams.”

The Amendment now generates about $85 million a year for water protection and restoration. The constitutional language clearly spells out that the money must “supplement traditional sources of funding” and “may not be used as a substitute.” We must ensure that the Amendment’s Clean Water dollars are not wasted. We must ensure that Minnesotans can look back in 25 years and be confident that our lakes, rivers and streams are measurably cleaner.
